Documentaries
The common theme with these is education, with a big focus on food production/health and personal development. So grab a bag of popcorn (or your movie snack of choice) and a pen & paper. Happy watching!
Cowspiracy & What the Health
Both of these are by Kip Anderson, and focus on the effects of meat consumption. These are both pro-vegan films; Cowspiracy focuses on animal agriculture, and it’s detrimental effects on the environment & What The Health discusses the direct health effects of consuming an animal based diet, with a big focus on red and processed meat. I recommend both these films, but be warned, they are not for the faint-hearted. There is a lot of heavy information, but it is very eye opening. These two films helped solidify my decision to stop eating and completely cut out red and processed meat (which you can read about here).
Blackfish
This is an incredibly emotional documentary and I HIGHLY recommend it. As you may or may not know, there has been a lot of controversy in recent years surrounding Sea World and the morality of keeping whales for show. This documentary covers the early years of sea world, the story of their main whale Tilikum, and the deaths of three trainers. It is told by former Sea World trainers, and it does not hold back, showing painful scenes. If you are unaware of the controversies at Sea World, if you have ever been or plan to go in the future, if you’re an animal activist, or simply a good-hearted person looking to learn more, you should take an hour and twenty minutes out of your day to watch this. Just make sure you have a box of tissues next to you.
Okja
“For 10 idyllic years, young Mija has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja – a massive animal and an even bigger friend – at her home in the mountains of South Korea. But that changes when family-owned, multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja for themselves and transports her to New York, where an image-obsessed and self-promoting CEO has big plans for Mija’s dearest friend. With no particular plan but single-minded in intent, Mija sets out on a rescue mission.” (Source: Google).
Get ready to cry your face off at this beautiful, intensely moving film. That’s all I have to say.
